LICENCE RENEWAL

Renewal cadence: All RN licenses expire Oct 31 each year. The renewal period begins 9/1 and you must renew your license by 10/31 or your license will lapse.
Renewal fee: None for 2022
Required contact hours: 12 hours of continuing education annually including:
– 2 contact hours related to mental health common to veterans and their families‍
– 3 contact hours (for first renewal) and 1 contact hour (every year thereafter) related to drug diversion training

Important Things to Know

Licensure and renewal can only be completed through the portal. Paper applications are not accepted.
Your application is valid for 6 months. If incomplete after 6 months have passed, your application will be discarded and you must reapply and repay the application fee.
If you answered “yes” to any eligibility questions, additional documentation may be required.

Process

Permanent License

Submit an application online and pay the fee
Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure and the state where you are currently employed. If these states do not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state’s BON and request verification be sent to the West Virginia BON.
Provide a background check with fingerprints. Instructions for fingerprinting can be found here.

Temporary License

If you wish to be issued a provisional license, please indicate this on your application.
Temporary permits are valid for 6 months.
Once all items have been received by the BON except the results of your background check, you may be issued a provisional license.
