LICENCE RENEWAL

  • Renewal cadence: Biannually
  • Renewal fee: $115
  • Required contact hours: Employment verification proving you have completed at least 140 hours of employment in any 12-month period, or an accumulated total of at least 480 hours within the preceding 6 years.

Important Things to Know

  • Your application is valid for 12 months. If incomplete after 12 months have passed, your application will be discarded and you must reapply and repay the application fee. 
  • You will not receive a paper copy of the temporary permit. Verification of your temporary permit can be found on the South Dakota Board of Nursing website

Licensure by Endorsement

Process

Permanent License

  1. Submit an application online and pay the fee.
  2. Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure. If this state does not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state’s BON and request verification be sent to the South Dakota BON via the Verification of Licensure form.
  3. Provide a completed Verification of Employment form showing you have completed at least 140 hours of nursing employment or volunteer hours in the past 12 months, or 480 hours in the past 6 years. Completed forms can be emailed to sdbon@state.sd.us.

    1. If you are a new graduate, indicate “new graduate” on your online application. You will not be required to complete the Verification of Employment form.

    2. If you do not have enough hours completed, you can see the Nurse Refresher Course here.
  4. Provide a background check with fingerprints. The BON will send you a fingerprinting card to complete. Do not complete fingerprints until you receive this card from the Board or your fingerprints will be rejected.

Temporary License

  1. If you wish to be issued a provisional license, please indicate this on your application.
  2. Temporary permits are valid for 90 days.
  3. Once all items have been received by the BON except the results of your fingerprints, you may be issued a provisional license.
