Renewal cadence: Your nursing license is valid for life unless it is surrendered, revoked, annulled or suspended by the New York State Board of Regents. Your registration certificate will authorize you to practice as a nurse for up to three years.
Renewal fee: $73
Required contact hours: Documentation of 1 training related to child abuse identification or infection control training, and 3 required hours of infection control every 3 years.
Registration renewals are available to all who are in the final 5 months of their current registration period or no more than 4 months past the expiration of their last valid registration period.
Each month a new group of licensees will be mailed their registration renewal documents and be eligible to renew online. With this service you may:

– Complete your registration renewal application, request an optional Professional Photo ID Card, and pay for both with a credit card.

– Choose to become inactive in your new registration period, and/or Change your address.

A background check is not required for licensure by endorsement.
After you have submitted all your documentation, please allow 6 weeks before submitting a Contact Us Form to request a status update.

Permanent License

Submit an application online or mailed in and pay the fee.
All applicants must complete and provide proof of completion of an Infection Control training and Child Abuse Identification and Reporting coursework.
Have the nursing school that made you eligible to take the NCLEX examination submit the Certification of Professional Education form on your behalf.
Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure and all other states where you have held a license to practice any profession, active or inactive. If these states do not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state’s BON and request verification be sent to the New York BON via the Verification of License form.

Temporary License

You may submit an Application for Limited Permit at the same time or any time after you submit your Application for Licensure.
Temporary permits are valid for 1 year from date of issue or until ten days after the applicant is notified of failure on the licensing examination.
Temporary permits are generally only granted to RNs who are obtaining licensure by examination, although may be granted to RNs seeking licensure by endorsement under special circumstances for a nurse who is under supervision of a facility.
