Participates in setting standards for patient care and nursing practice in obstetrical nursing.

Manages the obstetrical patient and neonate during labor, delivery, and recovery to include operative procedures. Length of recovery care determined by patient condition, minimum two hours.

Manages obstetrical medical conditions including preeclampsia, eclampsia, gestational diabetes, pre-term labor, premature rupture of amniotic membranes, repeat or scheduled cesarean section, or the induction or augmentation of labor, according to ACOG standards and Gonzales Healthcare Policy.

Performs non-stress tests.

Provides psychosocial care to the patient and family to include assessment of needs. Provides nursing interventions with complete, legible documentation.

Develops, implements, and maintains current maternal/child nursing care policies, procedures and practices.

Identifies problem areas of patient care and assists in formulating plans of action or taking action to solve them.

Actively engages in the development of nursing staff to provide quality maternal/child nursing care.

Provides care appropriate for the neonate and the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.

Assesses and interprets data on the neonate and the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients’ status to identify adolescent, and geriatric patients’ status to identify patients’ requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.

Performs admission, discharge, and daily assessment of all patients on the unit.

Assesses and interprets fetal strips.

Delegates tasks as appropriate to licensed vocational nurses according to their scope of practice.

Assesses the supplies needed and stocks the area at the end of each patient encounter.

Assures equipment is maintained in good working condition.
